Teaching Philosophy ...While knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create. -Albert Einstein
My goal as a teacher is to help my students to find, develop, and value their voice and the gifts they have to offer to the world. I know this is possible through the power of the arts. Art is the most essential form of universal communication and has allowed humans to understand the world, express their views, ask questions, and connect with one another. Ensuring that my students have meaningful experiences in a safe environment that encourages them to explore themselves and the world around them is my focus. I challenge them to take risks, analyze, evaluate, and push boundaries. I strive to expose students to a variety of artists and art making techniques. Furthermore, I place strong emphasis on critical thinking skills, leadership skills, and collective progression. In the twenty-first century, the most sought after employment skills will be creative problem solving and the ability to help others see information in new and unique ways. The exposures that my students gain in my classroom will cultivate empowered citizens.
Being an avid believer in “people first,” I recognize each of my students as an individual learner and I appreciate the tremendous wealth and variety of human experiences in a single class. In fostering the development and participation of all my students, I understand that creativity builds on the unique characteristics of each learner. I cater my lessons to the multiple intelligences in the classroom and I am committed to providing all students with the help they each need to progress not only as artists, but also as inquisitive, informed, and responsible members of their communities. I infuse my teaching with examples and perspectives representing a broad range of cultures and backgrounds. In order to accomplish this goal, I approach issues of diversity proactively to promote equality and to guarantee that all my students are provided equal opportunities to evaluate and design art, and I intend for each of my students to be able to enjoy and benefit from a multitude of meaningful art experiences.
Every dedicated teacher wants their students to reach their full potential. In order for students to do this, we set them up for success. I help my students succeed by providing dynamic and relevant lesson content and by practicing holistic art education methods that allow students to be engaged in a variety of fashions. Students are motivated, productive, and more likely to actively participate when they can see that their classroom experiences are purposeful and can be easily applied outside the walls of the school.
I am passionate about fostering a strong sense of community in schools because collaborative learning best supports individual growth. It is vital that students realize and understand that they are a part of something bigger than themselves, and that, together, they can inspire, organize, and generate change. I believe stressing qualities like personal responsibility, teamwork, tolerance, and commitment are all key in guiding students to becoming productive members of society. Creating support systems by involving families, administrators, and other community members in classroom activities ensures that students are well rounded and resourceful. I make efforts to familiarize my self with a variety of cultures because I understand the potential impact of art programs on the community.
I am an educator because I am unsatisfied with the status quo. I crave to live in a world where people can dream fearlessly and find meaning in the things that they do; a world where people are passionate and committed to learning and exploration. I believe that the arts can help all mankind find their passion and value their purpose.
